U.S. and global law enforcement seize LeakBase database used for stolen data sales.
The Department of Justice (DOJ) recently announced the seizure of the cybercrime forum LeakBase during a coordinated international law enforcement operation involving authorities from 14 countries. According to investigators, the platform had more than 142,000 members and contained large collections of stolen databases, including account credentials, financial information, and other personal data obtained through cyberattacks. The action involved the seizure of forum infrastructure and domains as well as the collection of digital evidence related to the site’s operations.
“The takedown of this cyber forum disrupts a major international platform that cybercriminals use to obtain and profit from the theft of sensitive personal, banking and account credentials,” said Assistant Attorney General Tysen Duva of the Justice Department’s Criminal Division. “The Criminal Division will continue to leverage our international relationships to protect victim personal and account information from falling into the hands of transnational criminal organizations.”
Officials from the Justice Department, the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), and Europol said the coordinated effort included arrests, search warrants, and investigative actions in multiple countries. Authorities stated that the investigation remains ongoing as evidence from the seized systems is reviewed.
